Sister Jane Estelle Bishop, O.S.B., a Benedictine Sister of Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, AL, died peacefully at the monastery on July 23, 2026, after an extended illness. Reception of the Body with Vespers of the Dead will take place at 4:45 PM on Thursday, July 30, followed by Visitation until 7:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM on Friday, July 31, with burial in the monastery cemetery to follow. All liturgies and Visitation will be held in Sacred Heart Monastery Chapel, 916 Convent Rd., Cullman. Sister Jane was born in 1935 in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Charles Herbert Bishop and Mary Margaret Langford Bishop. She was baptized Jane Estelle at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Aiea, Hawaii. Her father’s military career led the family to several destinations across the country before settling permanently in Pensacola, Florida. Sister Jane enjoyed her childhood and youth in Pensacola, finding a warm and vibrant community in her neighborhood, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church and School, and at Pensacola Catholic High School. She was a good student, serving at valedictorian of her high school graduating class. Sister Jane excelled at sports, both in the neighborhood, and on her high school’s basketball team. St. Stephen’s was staffed by Benedictine Sisters whom Sister Jane came to admire and who were the inspiration for her vocation. A pivotal memory she later shared was hearing the Sisters pray Vespers together in St. Stephen’s Church, a powerful and moving experience for her. Sister Jane entered Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman as a postulant in 1953, receiving the name Sister Mary Carol when she entered the novitiate a year later. In 1958, Sister Jane made her perpetual monastic profession. Following Vatican II, she chose the option to return to her baptismal name of Jane Estelle. As preparation for the ministry of education, Sister Jane earned an A.A. degree from Sacred Heart College in Cullman and a B.A. in history from Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, KS. She later completed an M.A. in Modern European History at the University of Notre Dame. Sister Jane’s first assigned ministry was teaching elementary grades in several diocesan schools. By 1965, she was teaching high school social studies, first at John Carroll Catholic High School, and then at her alma mater, Pensacola Catholic High School. Sister Jane’s desire to serve eventually led her from teaching to parish ministry. She ministered at Holy Spirit Church in Huntsville for four years as parish minister to the sick, aged, and bereaved. In 1985, she began service as Pastoral Minister at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Birmingham where her heart for ministry and her creative energy blossomed into twenty-seven years of fruitful service. Here, Sister Jane developed a bereavement ministry, organized care teams, trained Extraordinary Ministers of Communion for the sick, spear-headed fund-raising events to support outreach programs, engaged in prison ministry, helped initiate a parish connection with a mission in Mexico, and made many other contributions to the life of the parish. In 2009, Sister Jane and those with whom she ministered at St. Francis Xavier received the New Horizon Award from the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Center for Aging, acknowledging the contributions of Sister Jane and the St. Francis Xavier community in enhancing the health and well-being of older adults in the community. A life-long learner and always seeking to be well-prepared for service, Sister Jane attended many workshops and post-graduate programs during her years of teaching and pastoral ministry, including courses in economics, theology, bereavement, and gerontology. She was trained as a chaplain through a program in Clinical Pastoral Education. The broader civic community also benefited from Sister Jane’s expertise and passion for service through her engagement in organizations such as the North Alabama Regional Council on Aging and the Alabama Interfaith Council on Aging. Within the monastic community, Sister Jane served as Coordinator of Community Health Services for five years, caring untiringly for the community’s older sisters. She also served on the Monastic Council and on multiple committees during her years in community. Sister Jane was known for her compassionate heart, good humor, delightful laugh, love of reading, the ability to draw people together, and a visionary enthusiasm in taking on new projects. All of these characteristics were lifelong. From childhood through her final days, Sister Jane’s joyous presence brought a smile to countless hearts, her comforting presence offered solace to many, and her boundless energy showed the love of Christ in action. Sister Jane was preceded in death by her parents and by her siblings Betty Ann Harwood and June Carolyn Longo. Survivors include nieces, nephews, extended family, and her Benedictine Sisters.
