William James Welsh

William James Welsh, age 98, of Cullman, passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Summerford Nursing Home. He was born August 18, 1923, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Edward I. Welsh and Eleanor Demiskiewicz Welsh. Mr. Welsh proudly served in the U.S. Army as part of the 94th Infantry Division for four years on the ground. He was part of the D-Day recovery, was a decorated sergeant, and served under General Patton when relieving the troops at Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. After serving our country, he married Eleanor and received a degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He then served as maintenance manager of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for the George Washington Bridge before retiring. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cullman. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Glenn Welsh. Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Eleanor Falkowski Welsh; daughter, Janet (Curtis) Doyle; sons, Gary (Rose) Welsh and John Welsh; grandchildren, William J. (Lakeisha) Welsh, Juiliet Welsh, and Jessie (Chris) Brogan; great-grandson, Lawrence Brogan; sister, Theresa Cancro; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
