Corporal Larry M. Dunn

Corporal Larry M. Dunn, (US Army) 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion B Company 1 BN Infantry Division; a Korean War veteran, declared Missing In Action and later presumed dead, will make his final journey home to Cullman County in the next few days. Corporal Dunn was born December 20, 1931 in Cullman, Alabama. As a young man, he shipped out to Korean, was captured and declared Missing in Action in 1950. He was officially declared dead in 1953. As was the practice in 1954, many unidentified soldiers were interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. The remains of some of these heretofore unidentified remains have recently been exhumed. Corporal Larry M. Dunn was one of several such soldiers that were exhumed and positively identified despite the fact DNA was not used as a means of identification in the 1950s. Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the care of Corporal Dunn. The funeral professionals at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home firmly believe Corporal Dunn’s final journey home should be a tribute to the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country. Corporal Dunn will lie-in-state at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home, 255 County Road 1435, Cullman, Alabama Wednesday, Thursday and Friday September 14-16, 2016 from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. to give the community an opportunity to pay their respects and sign the memorial register. The family will receive friends Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 A.M. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 A.M. Following the funeral, Corporal Dunn and his family will be escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders to Mt. Carmel Cemetery where he will be laid to rest with full military honors, via Highway 157 and Highway 278. Corporal Dunn lost his mother, Lula Graves Dunn, at the age of eleven. He was survived, at the time of his death, by his father, John Paul Dunn; six brothers, Fletcher, Bud, Paul, J.L., Bill and Ben Dunn; a nephew, Charles Dunn; and a niece, Barbara South, all of whom are now deceased. Survivors presently include Corporal Dunn’s nieces, Rhonda Dunn Courington, Margie Whitehead, Joyce Estes, Terri Gilbert, Pam Dunn, Sandy Hughey and Susie Kampis; and nephews, John L. Dunn, Jerry Dunn, Brian Dunn, Michael Dunn, Delone Dunn, Ronald Dunn and Joey Dunn. Though it has been almost 66 years since Corporal Dunn was officially declared dead, it does not diminish the gratitude and pride felt by Corporal Dunn’s Cullman County family and friends. REST IN PEACE, CORPORAL DUNN, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. Cpt. Dunn is scheduled to arrive at the Huntsville Airport on Wednesday, September 14th at 8:51 AM. He will be escorted from the airport to Cullman Heritage Funeral Home by the Patriot Guard Riders along with others via the following route. I-565 from the Huntsville Airport to I-65 South I-65 South to Exit 304 (Good Hope Exit), Turn left onto Highway 69 and travel to the intersection of Hwy 69 & Highway 31 North Go left (North) on Highway 31 thru downtown Cullman and to the intersection of Hwy 157 Turn right onto Highway 157 and go to County Road 1435 (Eva Road) Turn left onto County Road 1435 and then left into the entrance of Cullman Heritage.
